Why Are My Teeth Different Shapes?

If you have looked in the mirror lately, you know that your teeth are not all the same size or shape. Why aren't all of our teeth shaped and sized the same? Your teeth have very specific tasks they perform to help you chew and digest food. Here are a few details you need to know about your teeth.

ABOUT YOUR TEETH

You have four types of teeth, and each one is different in size, shape, and function. Below we go into detail on each type.

Incisors Incisors are your four front teeth in your upper and lower jaws. Incisors are for cutting and slicing your food into smaller pieces to digest them, which is why they have precise edges. Incisors help you slice your food precisely, and once your food is coated with saliva, it is easier to digest.

Canines You will be able to spot canines right away because they are pointed, much like a dog's or a wolf's teeth, which is how they got their name. Canines help you cut and tear into food, such as corn on the cob or a chicken wing. Canines are strong, which is why you are able to rip off pieces of food from a larger piece. You have four canines in your upper jaw and four in your lower jaw as well.

Premolars and Molars Premolars and molars both have the same job. They help you chew your food into small, digestible bites. Both premolars and molars are large teeth with flat surfaces to help you chew and grind your food. Your molars have edges to facilitate grinding and chewing. Your premolars and molars are the workhorses of the teeth because you need them to chew and digest fruits and vegetables. Both fruits and vegetables would be nearly impossible to digest except for your premolars and molars.
