Treatments For Gum Disease

If you have gum disease, you may have decided to make your gum and tooth health a priority. No matter what your level of gum disease is, there are treatments you can take to help your gums remain as healthy as possible. Here are some tips for treatments of gum disease.

A LITTLE ABOUT GUM DISEASE

Gum disease is also called periodontal disease. There are three stages of gum disease. The first stage, called gingivitis, is completely treatable and does not cause lasting damage

to your mouth. The second and third stages are called periodontitis, and while the disease can be treated, it can't be cured entirely. However, if gum disease remains untreated, it can lead to gum infections that spread to other parts of your body, as well as tooth loss.

START WITH BRUSHING AND FLOSSING

The first step you should take if you have been diagnosed with gum disease is to brush and floss your teeth after each meal, as well as before you go to bed and when you wake up. Due to bacteria causing gum disease, both brushing and flossing remove excess bacteria from your mouth.

You can also visit a dentist for deep cleaning if you have periodontitis. Dentists can perform specialized cleaning called scaling on your gums. The dentist removes tartar from your gums at the gumline as well as below the gumline. By removing the tartar, dentists remove a lot of bacteria from your mouth, which keeps your gums as healthy as possible. Also, removing the tartar from your gumline helps to keep your gum pockets healthy too. If you have periodontitis, you may already know that spaces- called pockets- open up between your teeth and gums. These spaces can fill with food and bacteria, which can make your gum disease worse. By having your gums cleaned regularly, you are giving them a chance to stay healthy.
